Is it still in?

Move the stone across each line. A tiny difference can change the answer.

The far hog-line rule has an exception after a collision with another stone.

Granite’s three reminders

  • Far hog line: get completely across.
  • Back line: completely beyond is out.
  • Sideline: even touching is out.

Not All the Way Yet

At the back line, a stone is out only when the whole stone has crossed beyond the outside edge. Watch the Short, then try the back-line slider above.

Which edges and rules are we showing?

The dotted line marks the house-side edge of the far hog line, the outside edge of the back line, or the inside edge of the sideline. The dark band is the painted line.

The hog-line test is for a stone at rest after delivery, not a stone still traveling toward the house. Striking a stone already in play provides an exception. Crossing the back line completely or touching a sideline removes a stone during play too.

Each slider position is a fresh example. In a real game, a stone removed for a back-line or sideline violation cannot return into play. This is separate from releasing a stone before the near hog line. Other boundaries and special rule situations are outside this close-up.
