What Are the Grand Slams?

Major tournaments where many of the world’s best men’s and women’s teams compete throughout the season.

Start with the simple version

The Grand Slam of Curling is a series of elite team tournaments. More than one team from the same country can play, because these are not country-against-country world championships.

Winning a Slam is a major achievement. It does not automatically send a team to the Olympics.

Granite’s shortcut: “Worlds are countries against countries. Grand Slams are top teams against top teams.”

How do teams qualify?

The route changes from one Slam to the next. For the 2026–27 season:

  • Invitational: Twelve teams in each field receive invitations, while four earn places by winning designated Satellite Events.
  • Masters, National and Open: Twelve teams qualify through World Curling Tour points, two through designated Satellite Events, and two receive Grand Slam invitations.
  • Players’ Cup: The top 12 men’s and women’s teams qualify through points earned at Grand Slam and Satellite Events during the season. Only each team’s best six results count.
What is a Satellite Event? A tour event with a direct pathway into a particular Slam. The winner normally earns the berth. That is why winning an event such as Dale’s St. Paul Cashspiel can send a team directly to the GSOC National.
