Piper Finds Her Line
Mary Deuhs
A bonspiel is a curling tournament. This was Piper’s first with her new team.
That’s a lot of ice.
I brought extra cheering!
Page 2

Four players started on the ice.
BEA · LEAD
NIA · SECOND
SOFIA · THIRD
MAYA · SKIP
Fifth means... sitting?
For now. Watching is work, too.
Page 3

It curls more as it slows.
Good eyes. Watch the speed, too.
I’m watching this crumb. Suspicious.
Page 4

Game by game, the girls found their rhythm.
We’re in the final!
I’ve worn out my cheering voice.
Borrow mine!
Page 5

The Falcons scored one in the seventh end.
AFTER 7 HOUSECALL 4 FALCONS 4
Tied. One end left.
And our team throws last. That’s the hammer.
Page 6

Ow. My ankle.
Let’s get you some help.
Play paused. A first aider came over.
Bea, are you okay?
Page 7

Bea stayed off the ice. The official approved the substitution.
Piper, you’re our lead. You throw our first two.
Now?
Go on, Pipes. I’ll be right here.
Page 8

What if I mess up?
Then we play the next stone.
You’ve been watching. Take that with you.
Piper took one shaky breath. Then one step.
Page 9

The eighth and final end began.
We’ve got you.
A draw into the rings. Nice and smooth.
Piper’s heart was anything but smooth.
Page 10

Smooth. Just smooth.
shhhhh
Page 11

Heavy! No sweeping!
Past the rings. Past the back line. Out.
Oh, no.
Page 12

Everyone saw.
I let them down.
Page 13

What if I miss again?
Then we keep playing. Together.
Come stand with us.
Page 14

Her next stone wasn’t perfect. It was useful.
Okay.
That works. Good guard.
Page 15

The girls traded shots with the Falcons.
A little light!
I’m with you!
Piper kept watching. And helping.
Page 16

The Falcons’ last stone took the lead in the house.
Yellow is closest.
One red left. One point to win.
Page 17

A draw to the button.
The button is the little circle at the centre.
Piper, Nia: tell us what it needs.
I’ll watch the line.
Page 18

Maya let it go.
Page 19

What if I’m wrong again?
What do you see?
It’s slowing. It needs us.
Page 20

It’s light! Hard, Nia!
Hard!
Line’s good! Keep it going!
Page 21

Sweeping helped the stone travel farther. Together, they kept it moving.
Nearly there!
swish
swish
Page 22

Whoa! That’s enough!
One last glide.
Right onto the button.
Page 23

Great read, Piper! Great sweep, both of you!
Great throw!
FINAL HOUSECALL 5 FALCONS 4
Good game!
Good game!
Page 24

Still nervous?
A little. Save me a spot?
Always.
Five girls. One team.
Crumb emergency. I’m going in.
